Hanalei Bison Ranch, the largest piece of land for sale on the North Shore of Kauai in Hawaii, hit the market last week for $32 million.
The 228-acre working farm features far-reaching views of the Pacific Ocean and Hanalei Valley, plus grazing bison and tropical fruit orchards, according to the listing with Neal Norman of Hawai’i Life. The property has direct access to Hanalei River and Hanalei Bay, as well as three residences, two barns and four wells.
“Having a ranch of this size with river access to Hanalei Bay is pretty much as rare as it gets,” Mr. Norman said. “Anyone interested should plan a trip to Kauai to check it out…they will be awestruck by the crazy-amazing views.”

The ranch is also in the heart of the north shore of Kauai, also known as the Garden Island, added Eric Bronstein, also of Hawai’i Life.
“It’s so close to the surf town that everyone loves and its shopping and dining,” he said.
The residences are in need of some “TLC,” Mr. Norman noted, but there is room to expand on the land with the proper planning permission.
In addition, there are 89 bison currently roaming the land, as well as tilapia fishing, according to the agents.
The ranch was home to about 100 bison in 2018, when many of them escaped during a winter storm in Kauai, according to Honolulu’s Star Advertiser. The owner of the land, William “Buffalo Bill” Mowry, died a few weeks earlier and local officials were tasked with rounding them up.
The land is now part of a trust tied to Mowry, public records show. It is not clear how much he paid for the property.

Kauai’s real estate market has seen an influx of residents during the Covid-19 pandemic. Buyers have been snapping up property there, looking to spend time in tropical climes while taking advantage of the ability to work from home.
On the island’s North Shore, home sales increased 346% in the second quarter of 2021, compared to the same time period last year, which included the initial lockdown of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report from Hawai’i Life. The median sales price was $1.92 million.
